SPAYING AND NEUTER

  • There are many reasons why we highly recommend that your cat or dog is neutered.
  • Spaying and castration is healthier for the animal in the long run, and minimizes the risk of various cancers, and other health problems from developing.
  • Unneutered male cats and dogs may become aggressive if there is a female on heat in the vicinity: this can lead to fighting and injuries
  • Unneutered male cats and dogs can pick up the scent of a female on heat from up to 2 kilometers away, and they will often run off in search of her. Then, unable to find their way home, they are either picked up by someone or adapt to a miserable life on the street, adding to the growing problem of strays; or worse, are injured or killed.
  • Even home-loving female dogs can turn into ‘escape artists’ when on heat, in an effort to find a mate. This is dangerous for them, and stressful for you.
  • Females bleed for up to 2 weeks, every six months or so, which can be unhygienic and hard to cope with.
  • Animals live in the moment, so your pet will never ‘regret’ being neutered: he or she will not even be aware of any change.
  • Behaviour changes are very slight, and your pet will most likely be happier and more affectionate, yet still ready to exercise/play/run, just like before. It’s a myth that they will become lazy, so keep on walking to stay fit! He/she will probably get on better with other dogs, and generally be more relaxed.
  • When is the best time to neuter my pet?

CATS

  • Male cats can be neutered from six months of age
  • Female cats can be neutered from six months of age

DOGS

  • Male dogs can be neutered from six months of age
  • Females should be neutered three months after a season
  • What does the procedure involve?
  • The procedure involves removing the gonads under general anesthesia, the removal of the testicles in males and the ovaries and uterus in females.
  • Although Neutering is often seen as a ‘standard’ operation, this is not the case.
  • At Parkview Pet Center, no surgical operation is routine for us, so we use surgical and monitoring equipment of the highest standard.
  • After the operation, we will ensure your pet has come round before you come and take him/her home.
  • It may take a couple of days for your pet to recover fully, and he/she should relax quietly until then. We will provide antibiotics and painkillers, if required, so the recovery time passes smoothly and without discomfort.
